Movement History

There have been hundreds of divestment campaigns across the country since the early 2010s. UChicago’s fossil fuel divestment campaign began in 2013 under the Stop Funding Climate Change (SFCC) Campaign. The campaign was active until late 2016. In that time, they coordinated meetings with former President Robert Zimmer, coordinated a divestment referendum on the Student Government ballot, and created a 58-page report on divestment. The University Senate voted majority in favor of fossil fuel divestment, and over 200 faculty signed onto a letter in support of fossil fuels, which was covered in the Guardian. Eventually, after being stonewalled by the administration, the campaign fizzled out. The campaign was restarted in the fall of 2021 by the Environmental Justice Task Force, who coordinated actions and an updated petition. The AAUP also put out a faculty letter in favor of fossil fuel divestment. Now, multiple student organizations are involved in the movement, including the Environmental Justice Task Force, Phoenix Sustainability Initiative, and the Undergraduate Student Government Committee on Campus Sustainability.
